Extraordinary Adventures - Off to Space We Go

I remember in my quest to search and plan extraordinary trips in 2005 I came across a trip to the edge of the earth. Yes, I put it on my "to do" list, and every year since then when the time came to plan my annual vacation, I would always go back to the idea. I didn't believe it at first, it seamed like a dream, but when I realized that expedia was offering such deals it became something real I could do some day. As for the price, it was a lot less than I thought it would be. It was about $30,000.

The option was great. You fly to Moscow, stay at a nice hotel, get the feel of the city, and then they take you to a Zhukovsky Base about an hour from Moscow for your medical examination and training. Once ready you would enter the Mig-25 and off to space you go. Well, not really, you would fly to "the edge of the earth," still pretty cool if you ask me.

Today I went back to expedia to read more about the trip, but unfortunately I learned that they don't offer such options anymore as those trips were cancelled and no longer operate from Zhukovsky airbase. But there are alternatives. When such trips were cancelled in 2006 from Zhurcovsky, they started operating from a government authorized Nizhniy Novgorod military site.

Today booking such trip is not as convenient as it used to be (unless you are in UK), but you still have options if you book through an UK agency. As for the price, there are few options available ranging from $15,000-$25,000.

The good news is that there a couple of options in development that should take off from US in 2012/13 and the prices will range from $30,000-$200,000 USD.

Virgin Galactic has already started taking reservations for their flights which will cost $200,000. It costs $20,000 to reserve your spot and there are already over 400 people on the waiting list. Virgin Galactic option is an all inclusive option that will allow you to fly to (almost) space and (unlike the cheaper options) will give you the opportunity to unbuckle your seat belt and experience the zero gravity environment.

If you don't want to go that far, or don't have that much money, there is a cheaper option you could do. For only $4,950+tax you can experience the zero gravity environment and get a fell of being weightless and floating in the air, although this option will not allow you to see the curvature of the earth.

There are few companies that offer such tours. Their trips are convenient as they change their takeoff location through the year so you can choose the one closest to home. If you choose this option you would board a Boeing 727 that would make arcs while flying allowing you to enjoy the weightless environment where you could fly like a bird, float, and flip as your heart desires.

Whichever option you choose I am sure you will have an amazing experience that many would want to hear about. If you end up going to one of these trips do let us know about your experience, and I will continue to fill my penny jar until one day I will have enough pennies to experience this amazing adventure.
